Labs (TE 407)

Realia Lab: Uses a culturally authentic item ("realia") to kick-start and contextualize a lesson.  Mine uses the flag from the Valencian Community in Spain to begin a lesson on colors, which also involves an information gap activity based on identifying the colors of the flags of several Spanish-speaking countries. Level: 1
    Activity Plan:

Information Gap Lab: Focuses on an activity in which the students must communicate and interact in the target language to obtain information from each other. Mine involves students analyzing their own Spanish advertisements for cosmetic products and filling in a chart as they ask classmates about their products and their opinions of them. Pre- Reading/Listening/Viewing Lab: Explores engaging ways to incorporate a piece of media into a lesson and effectively prepare and students. This lesson gets students talking about the idea of nostalgia what they associate with "their generation," in order to prepare for watching a very popular Spanish Coca-Cola commercial that references pop culture elements of Spain's Generation-X and post-war attitudes.  Level: 4

Textbook-Based Contextualization Lab: Uses vocabulary from a typical Spanish textbook to create a dynamic but curriculum-friendly lesson. This plan has students reacting to various pop culture and news topics by quickly dividing into "agree," "neutral" and "disagree" groups, then individually sharing their personal thoughts with the class using the chapter's "Expressing Opinion" vocabulary. Level: 3

Grammar Lab: Introduces a grammatical concept in a contextualized, implicit way. My lesson introduces indirect object pronouns through modeling the concept of gift-giving and having students describe what happens using the new pronouns. Level: 2-3

Clothes and Colors "Fashion Show" Lesson:
Students review clothing vocabulary through an information gap activity that involves dressing up in goofy clothes, and later practice constructing description sentences for their classmates, who model their new outfits to music on the "catwalk." Level: 1

Shopping Scenario Lesson: A review and practice of school and shopping vocabulary in which students write and act out skits about going to the store, as the rest of the class competes to guess the scenario. Level: 2               Activity Plan: Download

American Culture and Stereotypes Lesson: Encourages students to think critically about the pros and cons of studying culture by switching perspectives. Students read and discuss passages from a Spain-published travel guide that highlights some oddities of American culture. Level: 3-4

Verb Tense Review Lesson: Reviews the preterit tense with two short activities (Harry Potter passage; vacation "photo album" worksheet) and a competitive pass-the-ball game that emphasizes repetition and quick thinking. The game rules can easily be altered for many other grammatical concepts. Level: 2

Visit from Native Speakers Lesson: Students prepare for a visit from two Ecuadorian students by writing, revising, and reviewing questions about their lives and cultures. Level: 2

1. Las Vacaciones vs. La Semana Normal -ar Verb Practice (Day 1):
Students practice switching around the endings of -ar verbs to talk about what they do during vacation and a normal week, interview their classmates, and document their findings in third person. Level: 1

2. Interview with a Fashion Designer (Days 2 and 3):
Using a recorded interview with Nick Verreos, a fashion designer best known for competing on Season 2 of competition reality show Project Runway (who was kind enough to chat with Señorita Luscombe in Spanish when he was in town for an event at MSU!), students will practice "decoding" a difficult passage and listening for a native speaker's usage of verbs.
